What Chesapeake Drivers Should Know Before Choosing a Class

After more than 20 years working with Virginia Driver Improvement students, one common registration mistake is choosing an eight-hour Driver Improvement course when the paperwork requires the complete twelve-hour RADEP program.

Match the course name and number of hours to the exact wording on your DMV notice, court order, or attorney instructions.

If your paperwork says Driver Improvement The standard Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic is eight hours. The same classroom course can also serve as RADEP Part 1 when accepted.
If your paperwork says RADEP or 12 hours Do not assume the eight-hour course alone completes the requirement. Classroom RADEP combines an acceptable eight-hour Part 1 with a separate four-hour RADEP Part 2 session.
If you are taking the class before court Confirm with your attorney or court how the certificate should be used and whether an additional RADEP component is expected. Completion does not determine a traffic-case outcome.

Common Reasons for Attendance

Who Takes a Chesapeake Virginia Driver Improvement Class?

Drivers attend Driver Improvement for different reasons. The reason recorded for attendance affects documentation and possible safe-driving-point treatment.

DMV-Required Attendance

Virginia DMV may direct a driver to complete an eight-hour Driver Improvement Clinic because of point accumulation or another licensing action.

Court-Required Attendance

A Virginia court may order Driver Improvement as part of a traffic case. Follow the exact course and documentation instructions issued by the court.

Voluntary Attendance

Eligible Virginia drivers may voluntarily complete Driver Improvement to improve driving knowledge and may qualify for safe-driving points under DMV rules.

Pre-Court / Attorney Guidance

Some drivers complete Driver Improvement before court after consulting with counsel. Confirm how the certificate should be used in your individual case.

Safe-Driving Point Guidance
Remember: DMV Points

Can the 8-Hour Driver Improvement Course Provide DMV Safe-Driving Points?

Point eligibility depends on the reason for attendance and applicable Virginia DMV or court rules. Completing the course does not guarantee points in every situation.

Voluntary
May qualify for +5 points

Eligible voluntary completion may qualify once every 24 months, subject to DMV rules and the maximum safe-driving-point balance.

DMV Required
Age rules apply

DMV-required drivers age 18 and older receive points under applicable DMV rules. Drivers under 18 do not receive points for required attendance.

Court Required
Court documentation required

Safe-driving points require a court document specifically authorizing the award. Present that document to the clinic; without it, DMV will not award points.

Insurance Discount
No DMV safe-driving points

Attendance for an insurance premium reduction does not receive Virginia DMV safe-driving points.
